As of about 10 a.m., the price was $3.169 a gallon for regular at two stations on Mantua Pike (Route 45) in Woodbury Heights.
According to Mapquest.com, that was the lowest price in the country, a nickel better than places in Tennessee and Georgia.
Well, not exactly.
That's because WaWa No. 19 quickly dropped its price by a penny to $3.15.9. Cash or credit card.
And that wasn't even the lowest price.
The nearby Pioneer had $3.149 a gallon (cash only), as of shortly after 11 a.m.
"We want to keep in competition with the WaWa," said clerk Billy Zurunz, 48. Zurunz said the station made the decision to lower the price by 2 cents last night.
And the Pioneer wasn't even picked up by Mapquest or gasbuddy.com.
The gas pumps and attendants at both WaWa and Pioneer were busy.
Chris Cream, 37, of Woodbury, said of the gas wars: "It's a beautiful, beautiful thing. I've been considering a job in North Jersey, so if prices continue to drop, then I will go [make the commute]."
Cream was at the Pioneer, paying cash (unleaded with a credit card was $3.209)
Rosemarie Martinelli of Blackwood was headed home and saw the Pioneer gas price. "I better stop while it's cheap. It's $3.33 where I live."
Danielle Ward, 21, from Sewell, is now a Pioneer customer. "I normally stop at WaWa. In this strip it's the cheapest."
Ward said her routine is to drive along the Route 45 strip in Woodbury Heights, searching for the lowest price.
She had $45 dollars to fill her Chevy Trailblazer. It cost $34.80 to fill the tank.
Two other places, a Liberty station less than a half-mile down the street, and an Enrite on Route 42 in Blackwood, also had gas for $3.169 earlier this morning.
At Liberty, customer Chester Hoffman, 79, said of the gas price prices: "It's much appreciated. If we get it down to where it belongs it will be great."
Kathleen Mahmoud of Sewell is like Ward: She cruises for the best prices and it's on her way home from work.
"I come this way because the three gas stations have the lowest prices."
Mapquest, the familiar online map and directions Web site, now maps the cheapest gas prices, as well. To check out its price maps, go to http://gasprices.mapquest.com. Click on "show national" to see the country's best reported prices.
According to Mapquest, the next best nationwide spot for regular was $3.22 a gallon at a station in Hermitage, Tenn., and another in Lafayette, Ga.
Mapquest's own New Jersey maps, however, showed that a Coastal Sunoco in Woodbury was also charging $3.22. It's at 438 Glassboro Rd.
Be aware that the reliability of these figures is questionable because they're based on reports by unpaid spotters.
