Rollins benched for being late

Disagrees with Manuel's decision

Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins was benched for this afternoon's game vs. the Mets because he was late arriving.

Rollins got to Shea Stadium about an hour before the 12:10 p.m. game, and then met with manager Charlie Manuel. He sat and watched his mates muster just seven hits against starter Oliver Perez and a couple of relievers in a 3-1 loss.

Rollins, who was benched earlier in the season for failing to run out a fly ball, said he disagreed with the decision this time around.

"We're not going to agree on this one," Rollins said. "I agreed with him last time but we're not going to agree on this one. I think he understood that and I understood it. But he's the manager, and he has to set a precendent and for certain players you are expected and held up to higher rules, and that's fine, that's part of it."

Rollins said he kept his normal routine, leaving the hotel in his own car 10 minutes after the second team bus departed for Shea Stadium.

"It's the same thing I do all the time," Rollins said. "Usually leave about 10 minutes after the bus when I drive myself. But you can't change lights and stuff."

Rollins pinch-hit in the ninth and grounded into a fielder's choice to end the game.

The change was announced 15 minutes before the scheduled start of the series finale against the Mets, with Eric Bruntlett replacing Rollins in the leadoff spot.

Rollins entered the game batting .270 and had a 10-game hitting streak. The loss amounted to another series loss for the Phillies, who fell out of first place.

Dog Steeth: LOL gress79: agreed, it would be really nice to have some real clubhouse leadership. Boy do we miss Aaron Rowand.

Who cares? Brunlett had three hits. Rollins would have never done that. He's the worst lead-off hitter in the game. What an offensive offense. This team is painful to root for.

That clanking sound you hear is the wheels falling off.

Package Rollins up and get him out of town...he's done here. He's peaked after last year.

I saw every game in Bright House Field in March. Didn't like Rollins nonchalant attitude in those games either. I know, ST games don't mean anything -- true enough for Ws/Ls -- may not be so with the mental part. The MVP crown is displaying some tarnish, how disappointing for such a talented player

No, the clanking is Uncle Charlie's fork hitting the plate as he scarfs down another delicious post game meal....after the 9 innings he just had.

J-Rolle just doesn't get it this year. He keeps saying they don't worry about how they are playing until it gets late- doesn't the guy understand that these games will mean something in late SEPT??? WTF??

Barring some unforeseen change in coaching philosophy, Donovan McNabb and the rest of the Eagles' projected starters will play in their final preseason game on Friday. Here's one look at what the full roster could be when the regular season arrives.
OBITUARIES
Right up to the time he closed his store near the Italian Market in 2002, Anthony P. Giunta Jr. was still ringing up sales on a 107-year-old hand-cranked brass cash register.
