Cindy Grassi, 43, of St. Louis, died at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania around 10:40 p.m.
Grassi suffered brain trauma, a broken pelvis and a broken leg after she and her friend, Sandra Wacker, 36, were struck by a car around 6:30 p.m. as they crossed Broad Street near Curtin, South Philadelphia, after the game Thursday, police said.
Wacker, 36, of Maryland Heights, Mo., suffered a broken leg and cuts. She remained in critical condition at HUP yesterday, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
The driver of the maroon 1998 Lexus, Joseph Genovese Jr., 18, of Juniper Street near Curtin, stopped at the scene and was arrested for driving under the influence.
According to published reports, the women were schoolteachers in St. Louis and regularly followed the Cardinals to away games, most recently going to Pittsburgh and Houston.
Grassi had retired from Mark Twain Elementary in Brentwood, Mo., where Wacker teaches fourth grade, according to the report.
Attempts to reach Wacker and Grassi's families were unsuccessful.
Joanne Allman, who lives in the same Maryland Heights condominium complex as Wacker, said Wacker is a nice neighbor.
"I didn't know her very well but she would always say hello to me when we got our mail," Allman said.
A decision about whether charges against Genovese will be upgraded in light of Grassi's death will be made by the District Attorney's Office, according to Sgt. Larry Ritchie of the Police Department's Accident Investigation Division.
Genovese, who is free on 10 percent of $5,000 bail, has a pending drug case for possession of marijuana from a June arrest, court records show. *
