Police: Philly teacher attacked by teens, robbed

PHILADELPHIA - Police are investigating an attack upon a Philadelphia elementary school teacher by a group of teenagers who knocked him unconscious and stole his laptop.

WCAU-TV ( http://bit.ly/10A1yUo) says the 28-year-old first-grade teacher was leaving the Clara Barton Elementary School in northeastern Philadelphia at about 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Capt. Mark Burgmann said the victim "passed a group of young kids and the next thing you know he got knocked unconscious." He says the robbers stole his cellphone, laptop and school papers.

Burgmann says staff from a neighboring school called 911 and the unnamed teacher was taken to Temple University Hospital, where he was treated for wounds and a concussion and released.

Police say they believe it was a crime of opportunity rather than one that targeted the teacher. They are seeking witnesses.

Not only was he outnumbered but sucker-punched. He must've not been a Philly native to not be aware of his surroundings.

If he had been packing heat, he still would've been knocked unconscious (it was obviously a sucker-punch that he never saw coming), and so a group of teenage thugs would have themselves a firearm, which they could use on their next victim.

How about people taking an active approach to getting fit and taking some self defense classes. We have a society of punks. Everybody is so scared of our youth. Maybe it's just my mentality but I wish somebody would approach me with bad intentions and no weapon. You can't live in fear.

Really...carrying heat or taking self defense classes....are you both posting without reading or thinking? He was attacked and knocked out from behind. If he had a gun on him then that would be another illegal gun on the streets as I am sure it would have been stolen, and what would self defense classes be good for after being knocked out from behind? And getting fit? Where did it say he was unfit or out of shape? Stop r5eading into things and use common sense. I am in good shape and also carry legally, but neither helps me if I am attacked from behind and knocked out, and there is no way of predicting all situations to avoid this no matter what you may thing!

So much for trust in a community. It renforces the old saying" I used to be a liberal, then I got mugged"

I used to be a conservative. Got mugged twice, car burgled once. I ceased to be a conservative and became a moderate/liberal. Chose my own path in life and on the streets where I work every single day, at all hours of the day. Haven't been mugged since.

If you expect the world to treat you like dirt the world will, by golly, treat you like dirt. My world right here in Philadelphia, is going pretty well.

Unfortunately, the teacher was practicing being politically correct by not anticipating an attack from behind by a certain demographic that is well known for that cheap trick.

Haha, packing heat. Self defense classes. Keep investing in those, maybe you'll become clairvoyant, see through time to prevent attacks from where you can't see.

At 5PM is dark at this time of the year, who in their right state of mind will carry a probably expensive laptop and other items around a probably dangerous neighborhood? I am from 5th and Hunting Park, and I have three laptops and I will never ever, had carry outside my house any of my laptops purchased legally. It's like carrying meat inside of a room with lions.

Isn't Clara Barton in the Feltonville section? Anyone walking through that neighborhood without being aware of their surroundings is a fool.
