THE PARENTS of a 15-year-old school dropout accused of shooting two other male teens on a Broad Street Line subway Wednesday afternoon turned him in to police Thursday, cops announced.
Police Capt. Sharon Seaborough said that she called the teen's father after he was identified as a suspect and that the boy's parents had him at the police station an hour and a half later, shortly before 5:30 p.m. The teen surrendered at the Central Detective Division at 21st and Hamilton streets.
"It's so sad the parents had to surrender their child," Seaborough said during a news conference Thursday night. "It has to be heart-wrenching."
Police did not identify the shooter because he is a juvenile. He's expected to face charges of aggravated assault, simple assault, reckless endangerment and related offenses.
Police said some initial reports that the incident stemmed from a high-school rivalry were inaccurate. The motive is still under investigation.
Seaborough did not elaborate on how the teen had been identified as the shooter.
