Camden man charged in two attacks, one fatal

A 32-year-old Camden man was arraigned Friday in Superior Court on charges he fatally stabbed a 42-year-old woman and attempted to kill a 28-year-old man early Wednesday.

Hector Cordero allegedly stabbed Delita Robinson around 3:10 a.m. inside an abandoned house in the 800 block of Newton Avenue in Camden's Lanning Square neighborhood.

Robinson, of Camden, was one of three people killed that day in the city, one of the deadliest days so far this year. Camden's homicide tally is now 31 - eight more than at the same time last year. Police said the other two killings were gang-related, but this one was not.

A woman who was walking along Broadway, not far from the scene of the stabbing, later told police she had rebuffed a man matching Cordero's description when he tried to solicit sex from her that morning, the arrest warrant says. She told police he had displayed his bloody hands and told her that he earlier had killed another woman.

Robinson had managed to walk to Seventh and Ramona Gonzalez Boulevard, in Bergen Square, where police found her lying in the street, bleeding. She was pronounced dead at Cooper University Hospital at 3:45 a.m., police said.

An autopsy found she had died of a stab wound to the chest, police said.

A few blocks away, police found Carlos Lugo of Camden, also with a stab wound to his chest. Lugo said the man who had stabbed him ran off, and police found Cordero trying to enter a house nearby.

Jason McLaughlin, a spokesman for the Camden County Prosecutor's Office, said he did not know whether there was a relationship between Cordero and the victims.

Cordero was being held at the Camden County Jail, his bail set at $1 million.
