They came to mourn 'Jackass' star ... and to learn a lesson

Kandie Esterl and her 20-year-old daughter, Kellie Caldwell, stopped their car on Route 322 in West Goshen yesterday to visit the burned-out wooded area where "Jackass" star Ryan Dunn and his friend were killed in a fiery crash Monday morning.

Caldwell, a huge fan of the "Jackass" film and TV offerings, will turn 21 in September. Her mother wanted her to be able to pay her respects - and to come away with a warning.

"I wanted her to see it so she can see what speed and drinking does, even to good people," said Esterl, of Downingtown. "It's just horrifying."

Chester County investigators are still looking into the cause of the crash, which killed Dunn, 34, and passenger Zachary Hartwell, 31. West Goshen police Chief Michael Carroll said it's believed that Dunn was driving upward of 100 mph when he tried to brake to turn onto Pottstown Pike.

The 2007 Porsche 911 GT3 instead skidded more than 100 feet, launched into a wooded area and exploded in flames, just 100 yards from Hartwell's house.

Investigators have taken blood samples to determine if alcohol played a role in the crash.

The results should be back in about a week, said David Garver, chief deputy coroner.

Autopsies completed Monday showed that both men died of "direct blunt and thermal trauma," he said.

The two friends were last seen early Monday at Barnaby's of America, a bar in West Chester.

According to conflicting reports, Dunn was either "not too drunk to drive" or "wasted" after consuming at least three beers and three shots between 10:30 p.m. and 2:10 a.m.

A photo posted on Dunn's Twitter account about midnight shows him red-faced and holding what appears to be a beer.

Among those that came to the crash site yesterday to pay their respects was Bam Margera, Dunn's "Jackass" co-star and friend since they attended West Chester East High School together.

Margera flew home from Arizona yesterday and visited the crash scene last night with a group of friends and his wife, Missy.

He rocked back and forth crying at the guardrail that Dunn's car crashed through, and at one point fell to his knees in tears, according to video shot by NBC10.

He had to be held up by his wife and friends as he left the scene.

"I've never lost anybody that I care about; he's my best friend," Margera told Fox 29, as he broke down in tears.

"He was the happiest person, the smartest guy; he had so much talent.

"And he had so many things going for him. This is not right. It's not right."

Dunn's family, originally from Ohio, also have come to the area to mourn.

Cars with Ohio, Pennsylvania and New Jersey license plates were among the many that lined Route 322 yesterday afternoon.

Some, like Caldwell, left notes, adding to a growing pile at the scene.

Flowers and a bottle of whiskey also were placed there.

Many people took photos of the blackened ground.

Some also took pieces of the car that they'd found in the woods.

One man said he intended to sell the pieces on eBay.
