Basketball scuffle turns scary as man shoots two others in N.E. gym

A pickup game of basketball ended in a double shooting last night inside the World Gym, in Northeast Philadelphia, police said.

For reasons that were unknown last night, a large fight broke out on the court about 7:35 p.m. among a group of men who had been playing ball, said police spokesman Lt. Frank Vanore.

One participant in the brawl left the gym, walked to his car and returned with a gun.

The man opened fire, wounding a 26-year-old man once in the chest and a 24-year-old man in the back and ear, Vanore said.

The victims, whose names were not released, were admitted to Aria Health's Torresdale campus in stable condition.

Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said the gunman and four accomplices fled the scene in a Buick, which investigators later found on Roosevelt Boulevard near Langdon Street.

"One of the males was in the car, and he was arrested," Small said, adding that police were unsure if the man in custody was the gunman.

No weapons were found inside the gym, which is in a shopping center on Roosevelt Boulevard near Bennett Road, and which is also home to several restaurants.

Small said about 50 customers were inside the gym when the gunshots rang out. No other injuries were reported.
