Hearing in slaying postponed
A preliminary hearing for Katoya Jones, accused of assisting in the June 27 murder of Rian Thal and Timothy Gilmore, was postponed in Municipal Court yesterday to Sept. 23 based on a request by Assistant District Attorney Carlos Vega.
Jones, 25, who also lived in the Piazza at Schmidts apartment complex in Northern Liberties where Thal lived, is charged with murder, conspiracy, robbery and related offenses. Police say she opened the building's front door for one of the gunmen, who let in others and went up to the seventh floor to wait for Thal and Gilmore.
Fire traps young couple
Thomas Doherty, 19, of Laurel Springs, N.J., was killed and his girlfriend is in critical condition after an early-morning fire yesterday trapped them in the basement of their home, police said.
Doherty was asleep in a basement bedroom with his girlfriend, who was not identified, when fire broke out shortly after 6 a.m., police said. The woman was flown to the University of Pennsylvania, and was reported in critical condition yesterday.
Reward in cop assault
Police are offering a $1,000 reward for information about the assault of an off-duty female police officer at a Gloucester Township bar Friday morning. Gloucester police say the officer was leaving Skeeter's Pub off the Black Horse Pike at 2:38 a.m. on Friday when a man approached and opened her door. The suspect struck the officer in the face, pushed her further into the vehicle and attempted to hold her down, but she resisted and the man eventually fled. Tipsters are asked to call the Gloucester Township Police Department at 856-228-4500.
19-year-old dies of Swine flu
A 19-year-old Montgomery County, woman with swine flu has died, the county Health Department said yesterday. Officials said the woman had underlying medical conditions and swine flu was a contributing factor to the death. The state Department of Health says the state has had five other swine flu-related deaths so far, three in Philadelphia and one each in Berks and Pike counties.
Train service suspended
Express and local shuttle buses will replace train service between Fern Rock Transportation Center and Jenkintown-Wyncote Station this weekend as a railroad bridge construction project continues over Tookany Creek. *
