NEW YORK - A suburban New York county has adopted the nation's first ban on a controversial chemical used to make baby bottles and toddler sippy cups.

NEW YORK - A suburban New York county has adopted the nation's first ban on a controversial chemical used to make baby bottles and toddler sippy cups.

The measure was passed by legislators in Long Island's Suffolk County last month and signed into law by County Executive Steve Levy today. It bans the sale of young children's beverage containers made with Bisphenol-A, or BPA.

Several states including California, Oregon, Washington and Hawaii are considering bans, but Suffolk is the first place in the nation to enact one. Canada announced in October it was banning BPA in baby bottles.
