Twelve people treated after smoky Collingswood fire

Twelve people, including seven police officers, were treated for smoke inhalation yesterday after a fire at a 10-story apartment house in Collingswood.

The fire at the Heights of Collingswood, on North Newton Lake Drive, started in a fourth-floor unit at 5:06 a.m.

Police arrived before firefighters and immediately helped tenants flee the building. Stairwells began to fill with smoke.

"There were real severe smoke conditions," said Sgt. David Bauman of the Collingswood Police Department.

Bauman said the fire was contained to one apartment. He added that about 25 people who lived on the fourth floor were displaced.

"Some were given assistance by the Red Cross and put up in hotels, some went to stay with relatives," Bauman said.

Everyone else in the building was allowed to return, he said.

Six of the injured officers were taken to Cooper University Hospital and released, a hospital spokeswoman said. One officer was transported to Our Lady of Lourdes and released, police said.

The injured residents were also released later in the day, police said.

Officials said the fire, which was brought under control at 6:28 a.m., was still under investigation.

The apartment building is part of a residential complex with hundreds of tenants.
