S.J. cop injured in traffic stop

A West Deptford Township police officer was injured this morning when he was struck by a passing car during a traffic stop on an interstate highway in Gloucester County.

About 5:30 a.m., Patrolman James Grant Jr pulled over a car on I-295 for a motor vehicle violation. Grant, an 11-year veteran, was in his patrol car and writing a summons when another vehicle slammed into the cruiser, police said.

Emergency crews extricated Grant from the wreckage and then rushed him to Cooper University Hospital in Camden. He was treated for minor injuries and will be kept overnight for observation, police said.

The driver of stopped car and the driver of the vehicle that crashed into Grant's cruiser were also taken to Cooper for treatment. Information on their conditions was not immediately available. State troopers are investigating.

The building of a baseball team is not a glorious task. There are hits and there are misses and an inordinate amount of publicity attached to both. But when it all pays off, there is plenty of satisfaction.

Wall Street joined in a worldwide cascade of despair yesterday over the financial crisis, driving the Dow Jones industrials to their biggest loss ever during a trading day. Even a big afternoon rally failed to keep the Dow from its first close below 10,000 since 2004.
