Capsized clamboat captain charged with “B.W.I.”

The skipper of a 69-foot clamboat that sank off the Jersey Shore early Wednesday has been charged with boating while intoxicated, authorities said.

Sean R. Rose, 44, was piloting the Susan II through the Manasquan Inlet when the vessel clipped a jetty and began to take on water, state police said.

Shortly after midnight, a crewman aboard the Susan II broadcast a "mayday." A Coast Guard rescue plucked three men from the ocean soon after about a half-mile northeast of the Inlet.

When Rose refused to blow into the Coast Guard crew's portable breathalyzer, he was charged with being under the influence. Rose, of Wellfleet Mass., was later released on his own recognizance, said Sgt. Valentino Borrelli of the New Jersey State Police.

The owner of the clamboat, Northstar II Fisheries of Gloucester Mass., is working with a salvage crew to raise the craft, said Chris McLaughlin, a spokesman for the Coast Guard. Divers were in the water late yesterday afternoon plugging holes in its hull.

The Susan II carried about 2,000 gallons of diesel fuel, but damage to ocean life and Ocean County beaches is expected to be minimal, McLaughlin said.

Unlike oil, diesel fuel evaporates quickly in water, especially on hot days, he said.
