Joe Paterno was released from Mount Nittany Medical Center this evening after being treated for dehydration, according to Jeff Nelson, Penn State's assistant athletic director for communication.
Nelson said the 81-year-old Penn State coach was currently at home resting, and is still planning to fly to Texas tomorrow to be the keynote speaker at a function for Texas coach Mack Brown.
Early this morning, Paterno was taken by ambulance from his State College home after complaining of nausea, weakness and fatigue, according to Guido D'Elia, a team spokesman. D'Elia also said that a full array of precautionary tests were performed.
"He's in good spirits," D'Elia said earlier today. "He's dying to get out of there. He's mad as heck. He doesn't like to lose time."
Paterno has been traveling a good deal over the last week. He was in King of Prussia on Saturday for a Nittany Lion Club fundraiser. He returned to State College for a breakfast with recruits who were in town for the Nike Camp. He then flew to Chicago on Monday for the Big Ten Conference coaches' meetings.
He returned yesterday and was talking to several recruits early this morning, according to D'Elia.
"It's a busy time, and he's been pushing it," D'Elia said.
In late March, Paterno said that a flu in January - during the recruiting high season - kept him out of commission for almost three weeks. He admitted the day after the Alamo Bowl in December that he was physically tired from the past year.
In November, 2006, Paterno suffered a broken leg when a player rolled over Paterno's leg during a sideline play at Wisconsin. He missed the next week's game and coached from the press box for the remainder of the season.
The iconic coach is in the last year of his current contract but has said repeatedly that he hopes to coach for more than two years and maybe for as many as five.
