Flags at half-staff for Peace Officers Memorial Day

Gov. Rendell has ordered all U.S. and Pennsylvania flags at state facilities throughout the commonwealth to be flown at half-staff today for Peace Officers Memorial Day.

Peace Officers Memorial Day was established federally in 1962, and Congress later authorized the president to direct that U.S. flags be flown at half-staff.

"On this day we will pay tribute to the local, state, and federal law enforcement officers who provide a vital public service and play an essential role in safeguarding the rights and freedoms of our citizens," Rendell said. "We honor them for their character, leadership, and courage."    - Inquirer staff
