PITTSBURGH -- Flyers defenseman Braydon Coburn was severely cut near his left eye early in the Flyers' 4-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference final Sunday night.
A shot by Hal Gill deflected up into Coburn's face off Evgeni Malkin's stick and required more than 40 stitches to close, according to early reports.
Coburn logged only 1 minute, 7 seconds of ice time before the injury.
His loss left the Flyers with only five defenseman for the remainder of the game. The Flyers already were playing this series without their top defenseman, Kimmo Timonen, who is sidelined with a blood clot in his left ankle.
“Obviously, it’s tough,” coach John Stevens said. “Cobey is an all-situation player. He plays a lot of minutes … I thought we got contributions from all (five) of them. I thought our ‘D’ played much better than we played the game before. It’s tough on the road, five ‘D’, one of your main guys goes out. I thought the five guys stepped up and played a hell of a game.”
Coburn's availability for Game 3 on Tuesday night is in question.
The Flyers trail two games to none as the series shifts to the Wachovia Center.
