Hip-hop stars in Phila. for Sunday ‘Summit’

Rapper Clifford "TI" Harris, will headline what's being billed as a National Hip-Hop Summit this weekend at Temple University.

The Summit, organized by record mogul Russell Simmons, is designed mobilize the hip-hop generation to vote in the Pennsylvania primary on Apr. 22 and the national presidential election on Nov. 4, organizers said.

"I personally know the value of having the right to vote and it taken away from you," said TI in a statement. "But I will add my voice to help inspire others to take seriously this right and responsibility."

TI lost his right to vote in 2004 after becoming a convicted felon for violating probation that stememed from a 1998 drug bust. In 2006 he was involved in a shootout in Cincinnati that resulted in the death of his best friend. Last year, the ATF arrested the 27-year-old rapper and charged him with attempting to buy a machine gun.

He pleaded guilty to three firearms charges in February and admitted trying to buy machine guns and silencers. He was sentenced to 1,000 hours of community service, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, and will begin to serve at 366 day jail sentence beginning next March.

TI, a budding movie star, will be part of a panel discussing election year issues at the Liacouris Center Arena, 1776 N. Broad Street. Doors open at 1 p.m. The free event begins at 2 p.m. Harris is not expected to perform.

The self-proclaimed "King of the South" will be joined by R&B singer Ciara, Simmons, and a gaggle of other stars.

Topics will include overcoming poverty, healthcare, education, drug prevention, violence, the war in Iraq and the importance of civic engagement, organizers said.

Also scheduled to appear at the Sunday confab are the platinum hip-hop star, Mike Jones; Flo-Rida; Jim Jones; Rich Boy; Styles P; Chrisette Michelle; Lyfe Jennings, Webbie; Lil X; Green Lantern, Gorilla Zoe, BET's "106 & Park" hosts Rocsi and Terrence J; Lil Boosie; Latino hip- hop/reggaeton stars Alexis y Fido; O'Neal McKnight; Emily King and NAACP National Director Stefanie Brown.

If rookie DeSean Jackson is able to keep his tiny body in one piece this summer - which is a big if for a 5-9 guy who weighs slightly more than Shawn Andrews' right leg - he'll provide an immediate boost to a return game that had trouble last season.

WASHINGTON - The House approved a sweeping plan yesterday to ease the most serious housing crisis since the Great Depression by providing aid to homeowners facing foreclosure and a federal backstop for the struggling mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
It was always a matter of when, not if. The city's $62 million Motorola radio system had the kind of spectacular crash on Tuesday night that critics have warned about for years.
