Former president Bill Clinton will deliver the keynote address at the "Kerner Plus 40" symposium at the University of Pennsylvania on Feb. 28.
Other participants will include Amy Gutmann, Penn president; Ronald Daniels, Penn provost; Tukufu Zuberi, director of Penn's Center for Africana Studies; and USA Today columnist DeWayne Wickham. "Kerner Plus 40" is a two-day symposium to discuss the 1968 Kerner Commission report on race relations in the U.S.
Malina Williams back in the race
Malina F. Williams, who had filed to oppose 28-year incumbent state Rep. Robert Donatucci in South Philadelphia's 185th District in 2006, but withdrew when her nominating petitions were challenged, is back in the race. Williams, a Democrat, and Kamalah K. Brown, a Republican, have filed against Democrat Donatucci.
Bus, car collide in W. Phila.
A SEPTA Route 36 bus and a passenger car collided on 61st Street near Passyunk Avenue, West Philadelphia, about 10 a.m. yesterday.
A passenger in the car and 11 bus passengers were taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania for observation. SEPTA spokesman Jim Whittaker said the injuries were minor.
Crash injures cop in N. Phila.
Officer Christopher Brennan, of the 24th District, suffered minor injuries about 10 a.m. yesterday when he was pulling out of the district's garage on Whittaker Avenue near Luzerne Street, North Philadelphia, and his car collided with another auto. He was treated at Temple University Hospital for injuries to his neck, back and wrist, and was released.
Cardinal to honor altar servers
Cardinal Justin Rigali, archbishop of Philadelphia, will be the celebrant and homilist for the annual Mass to honor altar servers at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Cathedral Basilica of Ss. Peter and Paul.
The way cookies crumble on I-95
A tractor trailer containing chocolate and lemon cookies made Valentine's Day a little sweeter and motorists a little bitter when it flipped and spilled its load on Interstate 95 in Ridley Township yesterday, causing a traffic backup for miles.
The accident occurred shortly after 1 p.m. on I-95 near the northbound Blue Route when driver Timothy C. Perry, 46, of Ontario, Canada, failed to negotiate a turn, state police said. A piece of the trailer left dangling over the ramp was eventually removed by several tow trucks, police said.
Camden slay suspect turns self in
Hector Flores, 25, of Lois Avenue, Camden, turned himself into police yesterday in the slaying of Frankie Hernandez-Maldonado, 29, of South 32nd Street in Camden on Jan. 20. Flores was charged with murder.
Police said Hernandez-Maldonado was shot to death in front of his home shortly after 3:30 a.m. as he pulled up in a white BMW. He was pronounced dead at Cooper University Hospital shortly after 5 a.m. *
