Singin' the beautiful blues

A beautifully handcrafted clock makes a statement no matter where you hang it - and this vintage, recycled clock is no exception. Though it started life as an antique glass dish, this clock comes complete with a quartz timepiece and a personality all its own. Depending on your style preferences, it could work in the kitchen, living room, or even the bathroom, but one thing
A beautifully handcrafted clock makes a statement no matter where you hang it - and this vintage, recycled clock is no exception. Though it started life as an antique glass dish, this clock comes complete with a quartz timepiece and a personality all its own. Depending on your style preferences, it could work in the kitchen, living room, or even the bathroom, but one thing's for sure: You'll want to put it in a place where people will see it. Everyone should know the time with a clock like this in the house. (Image courtesy of Solos Glass)

There's not a whole lot you can do to improve the global financial market, decrease the nation's growing debt or solve the burgeoning Social Security crisis. So it's time to start small, think big and let your true colors shine.

Make simple changes to kick things off - when the world goes a bit crazy, it's comforting to come home to a relaxing, peaceful environment. And what color embodies the soothing touch you need better than blue? "It's very calming - good in bedrooms and living rooms for a serene feel," explains Kat Liebschwager, founder and owner of Richmond, Va.-based Kat Liebschwager Interiors.

The Pantone Fashion + Home Smart Color System reports that blue is still big for Spring 2009, particularly the navy hue named Palace Blue. Work this shade of blue into your home décor for the serene, stylish escape you'll need at the end of the day. But whether you follow the new blue trend, stick with the classic French blue or go funky retro with cerulean, designers say that blue is always a smart, fun choice for any room.

Interior designer Marjorie Skouras of Los Angeles-based Marjorie Skouras Design, says not to be afraid of going bold and blue. "I love to do an entire room in blue. Different shades of blue will be really chic. Just look for complimentary shades and pick what you like. There are no rules," Skouras says.

"The feel depends on the shade," Liebschwager explains. "I've used turquoise in draperies in a dining room to really liven up the space and add a shock of color." Liebschwager recommends starting off in small doses - "Blue is so versatile. There are so many options in fabrics, lamps and accessories."
