DIY alert! Placemats to purses

Whether you’re attending a graduation, a wedding or a sorority soiree, sometimes finding just the right purse to compliment your outfit can be time consuming and costly.

You can now stop the search and save money by making your own one-of-a-kind Clutch Purse for less than 5 bucks!

Even better, this easy 3-step DIY can be made whether or not you know how to thread a needle.

Step 1

Choose a placemat which can be purchased for as low as $1.00 from any Dollar Tree store.  However, if you are looking for something a bit more fancy, head over to Pier1, Bed, Bath & Beyond, Burlington Coat Factory or a TJ Maxx/Marshalls.

Step 2

Fold and pin sides, leaving at least 4 inches at the top for the flap.

Step 3

Sew sides using a straight stitch.

If you do not have or don’t know how to use a sewing machine, stitch by hand or use Hot Glue or E-6000 Fabric Glue to close up the sides.  TIP: If using fabric glue, place a heavy book or object on top allowing the glue to set and dry for at least 24 hours.

An option to add a Magnetic or Sew-On Snap, or Velcro will keep the flap tightly closed, otherwise, just fold flap and place a heavy object on top for a few hours to press and flatten it.

You are now ready to hit the town with your new clutch purse!

Adding other embellishments such as lapel pins, buttons, ribbons, bows or even pieces of jewelry will turn your Placemat Purse into a truly unique bag! Try making several so you’ll have a different Clutch each time you’re out on the town having dinner! Placemat Purses are also perfect for bridal parties, as giveaways or hostess gifts, just be creative and have fun!
