The furniture will be featured at two sales. Beginning at 5 p.m. today in Garnet Valley, Briggs Auction will feature antique and reproduction furniture, including an Empire mahogany chest on ball-and-claw feet, two inlaid mahogany bedroom sets, one with a highboy, and a mahogany Gov. Winthrop desk.

The 1,500-lots sale also includes country antiques and collectibles. Preview is 9 a.m. to sale time at the gallery at 1347 Naamans Creek Rd.

The sale is a prelude to Briggs' special estate antique and decorative-arts sale on June 6, which will feature more than 700 lots of high-end objects, notably a Civil War-era drum made by Ernest Vogt of Philadelphia and an iron-and-zinc "flying horse" weather vane made by A.L. Jewell and Co., Waltham, Mass.

Briggs president John Turner says the weather vane could bring a five-figure price. One like it last sold for $35,000, Turner said this week.

Fine furniture also will be offered by S&S Auction at a special estate sale beginning at 8 a.m. Monday at the gallery in the South Jersey community of Repaupo, just off Route 295.

In addition to the large quantity of uncataloged goods that S&S offers at its regular biweekly sales, Monday's will be supplemented with a special online cataloged session of 38 lots, beginning at 5 p.m. and including a figural carved library table, a bronze-mounted bureauplat, and several lots of Jansen, notably a set of four painted armchairs and an ebonized dining table. S&S associate Glenn Sweeney says that Jansen, while "totally hot these days" is also "totally unpredictable," when it comes to presale estimates.

The catalog session also features several lots of artwork, notably two paintings by Laurence A. Campbell, one of a harbor on the Delaware River, the other a winterscape titled 20th Street, Philadelphia. Sweeney says the snow scene should bring $10,000 to $15,000 and the harbor scene $3,000 to $4,000.

Other catalog session items include a 30-inch marble sculpture by F. Vichi and a 36-inch oriental charger, each expected to bring $10,000 to $15,000, and a 68-inch bronze eagle attributed to Robert Woods & Co. It should sell for $4,000 to $6,000.

The garden and farm equipment will be offered by Barr Davis Auctioneers at a sale of the 3.8 acre Running Fox Farm in West Brandywine Township in Chester County beginning at 9 a.m. tomorrow. The real estate itself will be sold at noon.

Along with the estate's artwork - including framed botanical prints and sporting scenes; antiques, including an Art Deco painted metal horse; and furniture, including a terrier footstool and a painted-fox dough tray - the auction will offer a Scott 15HP 42-inch garden tractor, a Stihl chain saw (the brand not normally sold in big-box stores) and other tools; garden fountain and statuary; and fishing equipment.

The sale will open with the tools then move on to the garden items, auctioneer James S. Davis Jr. said this week. Aside from the property itself, Davis said, the auction's top items are the approximately four dozen lots of artwork, which date to the 1920s and will be offered at midday. "These are items you can't find too often," Davis said.

The American Indian baskets will be offered by Uniques & Antiques Auction sales beginning at 5 p.m. Thursday at its gallery at 2500 Market St. (Route 452 at I-95) in Aston. The 70 lots in the sale are a single collection that was last sold at Freeman's in 1938 and remained with the same collector ever since, according to Uniques & Antiques associate Ted Aikens.

The top lot is the first one, Aikens said this week. It is a bottleneck basket from the Yokut tribe of California that has a presale estimate of $5,000 to $7,000, although Aikens said he would not be surprised if it brought more.

West Coast tribes, he said, tend to produce higher-quality work than those in the other areas, such as the Apaches or Navajos that also are represented in the sale. The collection includes a selection of between eight and 10 Inuit works from Alaska that Aikens expects to sell for between $1,000 to $3,000 or $4,000.
