Looking for a place to carbo-load before the big race? Philadelphia has you covered.

This year’s “Choose Your Course” program takes place Saturday night at participating city restaurants (a full list is available here). Runners and their friends and family can choose specialized meals from a select menu.

Winnie Clowry, owner of Winnie’s LeBus in Manayunk spoke with Sports Doc about her restaurant’s offerings. Clowry’s restaurant is located right on the 20-mile mark of the course, and features its own cheer zone and DJ on race day. “We got involved in the Choose Your Course dinner to support these athletes and their families,” says Clowry. “If the runners want to do something special—go out to eat the night before the race—each restaurant offers a prix-fixe menu.

Winnie’s Saturday night menu starts with a choice of homemade soup or a side salad. For the second course, diners have three choices:

  • Butternut Squash Risotto: roasted butternut squash, asparagus, mushrooms, red peppers, fresh spinach and red onions simmered with Arborio rice and topped with parmesan cheese.
  • Chicken Sofrito: chile lime marinated chicken breast, char grilled, topped with a pineapple salsa and served with yellow rice pilaf and fresh broccoli.
  • Penne Daniella: portabella mushrooms, red peppers, asparagus, red onion, Calamata olives, capers, oven dried tomato pesto and parmesan cheese.

Dessert is a warmed homemade apple fritter with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce. The entire meal costs $25 per diner.

Restaurants throughout the downtown area, as well as Fairmount Park, Manayunk and University City are involved in the event. As of last week, 30 restaurants were registered to participate. Race organizers advise calling your favorite restaurant today to make a reservation, as Saturday is sure to be a busy night in the city.
