Elderly couple ran a marathon every day of 2013

Janette Murray-Wakelin, 64, and Alan Murray, 68, ran 365 marathons in 365 days, completing their yearlong run around Australia on New Year’s Eve. One marathon, ever day, for one year.

Running a marathon is no small feat — 26.2 grueling miles. Some marathoners are happy to have completed one while others get the "running bug" and continue to race well into their 10th or 20th marathon. But this elderly Australian couple took the "running bug" to the next level.

Janette Murray-Wakelin, 64, and Alan Murray, 68, ran 365 marathons in 365 days, completing their yearlong run around Australia on New Year's Eve in Melbourne. One marathon, every day, for one year. As if that's not enough, on January 1st, the couple ran their 366th marathon to set a new Guinness World Record for the most consecutive marathons.

Janette and Alan logged a total of 9,776.75 miles in 366 days — all while maintain a raw, vegan diet.

What inspired the sexagenarians to embark on this amazing challenge?

According to their Facebook page, the veteran vegan runners set out to "inspire and motivate conscious lifestyle choices, to promote kindness and compassion for all living beings and to raise environmental awareness for a sustainable future."
