Philly restaurant health code violations: Readers respond to "dirty fake lobster" comment

Whenever health reporter Sam Wood writes about restaurant health code violations, our readers respond passionately. But this month's installment brought even more response than usual. More than 187,000 people read the story in the first 24 hours and it garnered hundreds of comments and conversations on Philly.com and around social media.

Some commenters wondered about what the phrase "dirty fake lobster" meant — and many made jokes about the unusual phrasing.

Joseph M. Wilson Jr. wrote on Facebook, "Dirty Fake Lobster sounds like an awesome hardcore/thrash/industrial-goth band." He wasn't alone in thinking that the unusual phrase could provide some musical inspiration.

Other commenters lamented the bad review of the Crab Shack, one of the more well-known restaurants on the list. Facebook users Jacqueline Dickens's, Melicia Pompey and Catherine Richardson remembered the restaurant having tasty food and were disappointed to hear about the health code violations.

One Philly.com commenter admitted that he'd just eaten at the Crab Shack the night before the story was published.

Other readers took a more serious tone when conversing about the story. On Facebook, David Downie wondered when Philadelphia will implement a letter grading system for restaurants, a sentiment echoed by Philly.com commenter Joyce Sample.

While some readers, like Facebook user Laura Pieczynksi, are thankful that Wood reports on the restaurant violations, others voiced their displeasure, saying that the information scared them away from certain types of restaurants.

Similarly, several readers on Facebook were unsurprised by the health code violations and shared their own experiences with unseemly dining conditions.
