Clean Plates: The latest Philly eateries closed for health violations

Mad Mex, a popular University City Mexican cantina at 34th and Walnut Streets, was asked to close on May 4 and remained shuttered through Cinco de Mayo until May 9, 2017.

The following restaurants and eateries were closed temporarily by the Philadelphia Department of Public Health between April 26 and May 10 for "unacceptable" conditions or "imminent health hazards." A list of eateries facing court dates follows.

Domino's Pizza

6001 LANCASTER AVE 19151

1 violation, 1 serious. 

No person-in-charge on duty. Ordered to close for minimum of 48 hours on May 10.  Previously asked to close Aug. 17 and Dec. 12 for same offense.

Cake stored on dirty plastic bucket; heavy mouse droppings on shelves, trays in in oven; brown mouse spotted running across shelf under a cake decorating table; general cleaning needed to get rid of grease. Ordered to close for a minimum of 48 hours on May 9. Previously ordered to cease operations on Sept. 9 and June 19, 2013.

The health department inspects nearly 1,000 eateries and food retailers every two weeks. Every inspection is generally regarded as a “snapshot in time,” and not necessarily a reflection of day-to-day conditions.  Most violations were fixed immediately on site.
