Where to get a beer near the Philadelphia Marathon finish line

It’s a common ritual among running buddies — they run, then they drink. Just ask the Fishtown Beer Runners who end all their weekly runs with a pint. But did you know there’s a science behind those post-run brews?

It's a common ritual among running buddies — they run, then they drink. Just ask the Fishtown Beer Runners who end all their weekly runs with a pint. But did you know there's a science behind those post-run brews?

In a 2007 study conducted by the School of Medicine at University of Granada, Spain, Professor Manuel J. Castillo found that beer in moderate amounts is as effective as water for rehydration and recovery after exercise. (I can sense your excitement…)

The researchers tested 16 healthy young males after two exhausting and dehydrating exercise bouts (aka a one-hour run on the treadmill) three weeks apart. After one run, the men rehydrated only with water and, after the other, they rehydrated first with a pint of beer followed by water. The researchers found that after each run, the men were equally hydrated whether they drank all water or had a beer and then water.

So with science on your side, if you're thirsty for an ice-cold beer after you cross the finish line next Sunday, here's a list of bars offering specials no more than a mile from the finish line. Hey, after 26.2, what's another mile in the name of good beer?
