The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania is the region's largest hospital, with 2010 revenues of $1.8 billion. It regularly ranks among the nation's best in some 15 specialties ranging from psychiatry to cardiology to orthopedics. HUP's doctors typically teach at Penn's school of medicine, the nation's first. HUP is the site of more federal research grants than any other hospital in the region. Recent breakthroughs involve gene therapy for a kind of leukemia, a promising new treatment for HIV and a novel way to detect Parkinson's and Alzheimers. HUP also has the region's largest transplant program.
