Today known as the ‘most depressing day of the year’

Feeling like you’re having an extra bad case of the Mondays and are not sure why? It’s probably because today is the most miserable day of the year, according to researchers.

Feeling like you're having an extra bad case of the Mondays and are not sure why? It's probably because today is the most miserable day of the year, according to researchers.

Based on a theory done by UK psychologist Cliff Arnall, the third Monday in January, dubbed "Blue Monday," is when people are feeling most down. The lack of holidays coming up, failed New Year's resolutions, and the increasing colder temperatures outside have lead people to lose motivation and feel depressed, the study suggests.

This theory dates back to 2005, when Arnall developed a mathematical formula that calculated this day using several factors such as the time since Christmas and the weather, the International Business Times reports.

Whether you believe if there is any truth to this formula or not, (Arnall created the theory as a marketing campaign for a travel company, Sky Travel), there are ways to combat feeling down as the temperatures continue to drop this week.

After a 20-degree temperature drop overnight and while snow is predicted this week, experts suggest exercising, light therapy, or even just sitting by a window to help boost the winter blues, according to the New York Daily News.
