Crossfitters are strange cultists, but my main criticism is the focus on high-repetition olympic lifts. These are strength exercises, and you never see anyone outside of crossfit racing to see how many one can do in a minute. There is a reason for this. Good form is very important here when using these weights. Fatigue due to high repetition easily leads to form breakdown, which in turn leads to injury.

I couldn't agree more with the comments from Froghelmut. As a trainer of college and pro athletes it can take up to 6 months to perfect an Olympic movement. Crossfit not only does not do this amount of training but they use to many repetitions and the form breaks down even more. It is estimated that over 50% of Crossfiters get hurt. Now stop all the yelling... I love the dedication and hard work they all do but there are no scientific studies showing the effectiveness compared to other forms of resistance training or HIIT. To get your biggest bang for your buck do functional resistance training with proper form and then have some sort of periodization (changing the number of reps and %weight) over time. Good Luck. Train hard but SMART!!!!

Shocking what do you know its a bunch of commenters going on about improper form. Just get after it don't worry about where your elbows are or whether your knees bow out a bit on a squat. Heavens! I laugh at the amounts of weight the crossfitter uses, thinking it hardcore. Can't complain about what it does to womens' physiques.

I love Crossfit training but the costs for most places is just way to freaking high. If it was a bit more reasonable I would stay with it. But current budget being what it is...it was a one month change and back to my regular (much cheaper) gym. But I loved it while I did it.

Good way to ruin your kidneys. Trendy workout is silly.

For the record its rarely less than 30 minutes. Most boxes have multiple activities/WODs. Between dynamic warmups, skill work, WOD, and cool down, you are looking at about an hour...but its an efficient hour to say the least

Form is critical. I've cycled through p90x, and now kicked it up a notch to Insanity. Both preach proper form, and taking breaks to keep proper form is brought up constantly throughout the workouts.

I'm going to skip over the inevitable argument over the CrossFit methodology in order to get to the really important thing: snarking at the editing of this story.

"The CrossFit workout seems intimidating but it's actually not"

How does this sentence make any sense at all? If it seems intimidating to you, odds are you are intimidated.
