Crashing toward independence
Posted on Fri, Sep 14, 2012
Each week, 25-year-old John Benson, of Laurel, Del. makes a two-hour trek toward independence. Benson was paralyzed from the waist down, and lost some functions in his arms, after diving into a swimming pool hanging out with friends over four years ago. Eventually, he joined the Magee Eagles wheelchair rugby team, where he and his his teammates work to re-learn daily life skills, and something less tangible - a sense of belonging and purpose. The team practices on Tuesday nights at the Carousel House in Fairmount, in full view of a motto painted on one of the tan, brick walls at the north end of the basketball court - “Pushing Toward Excellence.” The motto serves as a visual -- and literal -- form of encouragement for the wheelchair athletes who train there.
