Free Kayaking On Delaware River

The city, the Pennsylvania Environmental Council and the Delaware River Waterfront Corp., are launching a free kayaking program for the summer along the Delaware River.

Mayor Michael Nutter, joined by the two groups, is expected to make the announcement at Penn’s Landing Marina near the Independence Seaport Museum. The proclamation is part of the city’s vision to bolster residents’ connection to the river and Environmental Council’s efforts to increase recreation opportunities along the Delaware River.

A trained staff will be available to supervise kayakers by the marina. The Tidal Delaware Water Trail has been mapped and checked for recreation along the Delaware River and identifies access points, safety considerations, points of interest and amenities along the 56-mile stretch of tidal river from Trenton, N.J., to Marcus Hook, Pa.

Funding for the free program is being provided by the Take Me to the River grant program, administered by the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission with funding from the William Penn Foundation. The Delaware River Waterfront Corporation is a nonprofit group serving as the steward of the Delaware River waterfront.
