Tuskegee Airmen
Prior to 1940, African-American pilots were excluded from the U.S. military. The Tuskegee Airmen were a revolutionary corps of all-African American fighter pilots assembled in 1941. They surmounted racial prejudice to become one of the most successful fighter squadrons in WWII.
