Sounds like part of Obama's war on private non-profits in order to make everyone dependent on the Federal Govt.

There is a HUGE difference between this beach and others...the ownership. It is privately held and they can charge or allow only certainly people the rights to use it. It is not open to every citizen of the united states. FEMA is absolutely correct. They should have had the boardwalk insured...there is no reason for my tax dollars to pay for this if I can't use it.

Obama's war on private non-profits? Where on Earth did that come from? Deed the boardwalk to Neptune Twp and this all gets done. If a private religious group wants control of the boardwalk (and they do--there is an outdoor prayer area on the boardwalk), INSURE IT.

Clearly the professor has had to many cranial/rectal encounters - war on non-profits? Oh well.

    1. boardwalks are not insurable under federal flood insurance nor is the beach side prayer area.
    2. you assume Neptune township wants responsibility for this area, which I question. Ocean Grove has done splendidly as stewards of this beach area. Built a more durable boardwalk that exceeded code requirements. However,Neptune Township is working feverishly on behalf of Ocean Grove to obtain FEMA help because the beach and boardwalk are publicly accessible. This is not a restricted beach.
    3. Ocean Grove is not asking for assistance with town damage only the public areas.
    4. Private residents are eligible for FEMA provided they had flood insurance.

Ocean Grove, NJ has a checkerd history - at least more than 100 hundred years - when it comes to begging the Fed Government for public funds. When they need money they present themselves as being "Public" but when it comes to matters of living they are very muich a thightly knit religious organization.
The Camp Meeting still owns all the land in town and leases it to homeowners and businesses for 99-year renewable terms. The Camp Meeting Association currently keeps its beach closed on Sunday mornings between 8:30 am and 12:30 pm, and Ocean Grove is still "dry", that is, the sale of all alcoholic beverages is prohibited.

    Dry like Ocean City, NJ.

And you're right about "presenting" itself as public at different times. This is one of those times and it only applies for areas that are indeed "public".

If you will check, you will find that Ocean Grove beaches will be open for PUBLIC use beginning Memorial Day. There will be restrictions (mostly north from SeaView to Wesley Lake) on boardwalk access because the boardwalk repairs will not have been completed.

Charging tolls and beach access fees might help defray some the costs.

Under NO circumstances should taxpayer money be used to pay for private repairs.

@Professor1982 - So Obama is going to "make everyone dependent on the Federal Govt." by expecting private owners to carry their own weight without government funds? Diabolical!
