Dollar Tree buys Family Dollar to lead segment

NEW YORK - The fight for penny pinchers is intensifying. Dollar Tree Inc. said Monday that it is buying rival discounter Family Dollar Stores Inc. for $8.5 billion, significantly broadening its reach as it looks to fend off Wal-Mart, which has been stepping up its courtship of lower-income customers.
