So,Antoine Gardiner of Villanova is actually proud that he is a particularly greedy slum lord? What a loathsome individual.

If these properties were in Villanova or any other suburb they the owners would receive notice that a lien is being placed on the property. Then within months the properties are sold at Sheriff's Sale. This is done in the richest and poorest townships surrounding the city. So our city council people are idiots thinking they are protecting the poor.

Sorry, but you're waaay off. Lien YES, Sheriff's Sale a BIG NO. Lower Merion is a lot like Phila. in this regard. Lots of freeloaders not paying property/school taxes. Remember the Robbinses of the Webcam debacle. Bigtime tax scofflaws; and they're not alone. And I mean some quite affluent individuals who are obviously not tied down with an escrow payment tagged on to their mortgage. LM is a huge joke.

The real question is why has City Council sat on this for so long? Why aren't there any advisors to educate them about the real state of delinquent property tax deadbeats?

No, that's not the real question. Philadelphia is the victim here. We are the victim of the investor class.

I do take your point, and there is much that the city should be doing to collect this money. But the real villain is the investors who rip us off.

You ever hear the old saying "Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me?" Well guess what? Some in the evil "investor class" have apparently been fooling the city for years, and the city has let them do it time and time again. Now, the city discovers that there are over $500million in uncollected taxes out there, most of which could have been collected years ago if they took a more aggressive stand against delinquent owners. Instead of doing something about it, they just raise taxes on the suckers who do pay.

Keep dreaming Tatt, if the Dems allowed Sherriff sales like they are supposed to, this would be a moot problem. The citizens are the real victims of poor Dem leadership.

its so simple to take care of - take them to court - give them 30 days to pay - no payment - it gets sold by the city at cost of taxes. city council would need to pass law that forbids tax cheats from owning property in the city or purchasing more. but its philly - where its pay for play - bet the loosers are the ones giving money towards elections

nutter doesn't intend to do anything, following the street and rendell playbook of not going after society's freeloaders, a/k/a the 47%. keeping voting democrat, though

"The Nutter administration endorses elements of Green's proposal, such as the formalized payment plans, but opposes a hard-and-fast date to begin the legal process that can ultimately lead to a sheriff's sale of tax-delinquent property."

Its easier to raise taxes on people who have a record of paying than do the real and dirtier work as outlined here. Ghettodelphia spreads like a cancer and this one is nearing terminal stages

Ghettodelphia? Did you even read the article?

The problem is largely outside investors--people who have money but won't pay--people who live in the suburbs and other states and are ripping this city off--companies who try to make a quick buck at our expense. That's the cancer.

"According to public records, Gardiner and his company owe $471,000 in back taxes on 58 properties,"

So why isn't he in jail? At least place advertisements in the local Villanova paper to shame him in front of his neighbors. You know - mug shot, how much he owes, and pix of the condition of the vacant lots or crumbled houses. This isn't rocket science people.
