Eagles have plenty of choices if they want to sign a safety in free agency
Posted on Thu, Mar 07, 2013
The stars have aligned. The Eagles need starting safeties - again. More than a handful of proven starters are waiting to be snatched up in free agency. And the Eagles have more than enough salary-cap space to sign one of the top talents.

    "Eagles have choices at safety"

For the purposes of this article, we'll call them "bad" and "worse".

The article makes it sound like a choice between drafting a safety and signing a FA safety. Wrong. They have to do both. They also need to draft a CB and sign a FA CB. They need a nose tackle and an end and some LBs. There is nothing they don't need on defense.

I would take a shot with Kenny Phillips. He made the Giants better when he was playing. Unfortunately he was hurt more than healthy this past season.

    Howie's tips for NFL success:
    1. Find the oldest most highly touted player, 2. Sign him away from other teams with an inflated contract. 3. Celebrate all throughout the offseason and preseason. 4. Blame the coach when it doesnt work. BEST YOUNG MIND IN FOOTBALL.

"Likely Hall of Famers Ed Reed and Charles Woodson will be available as well, but the rebuilding Eagles are unlikely to want short-term answers at safety."

Not to mention these HoF safeties are unlikely to want anything to do with this sorry squad

Couldve had Earl Thomas years ago. Instead, theyre still trying to figure out what to do at safety... Amazing.

There is no point to signing high priced talent. Look to the draft and sign a couple of second tier safeties.

Too many holes to fill. Just don't look for the next big name to put you over the top. Look for pieces you can build on. Doesn't have to be a safety, but the Eagles don't have enough draft picks to fill all the holes.

Gholdson to Cincy and Noway we get Quinn. Go after Moore hard. Draft Corner in 2nd round if we dont take milliner. This draft is very deep at CB. load up!

The fact that they have so many holes to fill actually makes it necessary to sign at least 1 or 2 free agents that can start for the team. During any draft, only about 50% of a teams draft picks end up playing eventually (we could argue that's a lower number for the Eagles) and only 1 or 2 actually contribute right away. The Eagles don't have 5 or 6 years to rebuild the team through the draft. It's a win now league. If they can somehow manage to get 2 starters in the draft and 1 or 2 starters in free agency, they will be on their way back to being competitive.

Quinn in a heartbeat. 5 year deal, put him at FS. Easier to bring a drafted safety into the starting lineup at SS. So at least in year one of the rebuild, they can address the defensive backfield.
