WITH PITCHERS and catchers reporting to Clearwater, Fla., in 2 weeks, Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. hasn't stopped fiddling with his roster.

One man's "depth" is the rest of the league's garbage. If it is true that Halladay and Utley are healthy, what Amaro did (and didn't) do this off-season will have been a crime. Copper34
Your comment "If it is true that Halladay and Utley are healthy, what Amaro did (and didn't) do this off-season will have been a crime." makes no sense--it is just more "baying at the moon (that you and Warbiscuit think is Amaro)". If Utley and Halliday are healthy--then Amao plugged holes at thirdbase, centerfield and in the bullpen.
He also created what could be a very healthy "open" competition for the corner outfieled spots, without locking up dollars by bringing in overpriced and (to this point in their careers) underperforming free agents.
So we enter Spring Training with and experienced (and aging) infield and catching core--but a good combination of youth and experience in the starting pitchers, the bullpen, the outfield and the bench.
The Braves and the Nats made splashier moves and on paper they appear to have the edge--but baseball is a game of "ifs" and every team has them.
One "if" is how the Upton brothers will mesh--could be good and it could be bad.
Another "if" is whether the Nats played over their heads last year and "if" their good year was a consequence of the Phillies down year.
Another "if" is the performance of Utley and Howard in 2013. A return to "form" or even near form will make the Philles awfully tough to beat.
The reason that the games are played is because there are at least 27 "ifs" for each team in every game of the season.
Let's see what happens "IF........" Smoothellc
The best team in the league will lose 60 games...the worst will win 50. A whole lotta time in-between... Leo Getz
the "depth" is the thickness of the rocks in the imbecile's head warbiscuit
@smoothelic --didn't get past your first sentence but you just show your ignorance and parochial naivete if you think there are just a couple of posters who rip Amaro's awful destruction of this franchise over past few years and realize that think Rube is incompetent -- go "enlighten" yourself if you dare and read SI, ESPN, crashburnalley, cbs, SBNation , the goodphight, etc etc instead of wallowing in your self-delusion warbiscuit
I'm one that rips him . I'm not alone, and while some can come to his defense, I can't. If he does a positive move without destroying the farm system entirely, I'l applaud him. If he sits on his hands as he has with replacing Jason Werth's bat, I'll rip him. He's a bargain basement shopper paying for more than he gets. He keeps losers on the roster aka; Brown, hoping his
assessment of Brown's talent is correct. So far he has been a dismal failure. Quit fishing, It's time to cut bait.
There is truth in the old saying, "All that glitters is not gold !" We've seen the tarnish. I'm sure you have too.
Anyone looking , can see a whole team crumbling in front of their eyes, yet like Nero, Amaro fiddles while Philadelphia burns. phineas
