Posted on Tue, Jan 15, 2013
BRADLEY BEACH, N.J. - This Shore town came through Sandy better than many of its neighbors. A major reason: It had protective sand dunes in place.

Homeowner groups can own a beach? I thought all ocean beaches in NJ were publicly owned. This is taken from a page on the NJ DEP website

"The public’s right to access tidal waters and their shorelines is a concept that existed prior to the inception of the State of New Jersey and continues to this day. Public access is a right expressed in the Public Trust Doctrine, in the many court cases that have interpreted and implemented its strictures, and implicitly in the many legislative acts and regulatory provisions that have sought to protect and enhance access."

So how is it that a homeowners group can own a beach?

That was in Toms River. Non-Ocean front beaches can be privately owned.

I absolute agree with Christie. In fact, since keeping flooding and destruction at a minimum for that part of their property and is for the public good, I think the state should eminent domain these selfish folks, pay them FMV for a portion of their property, or, in the alternative, flood insurance should not be available to them.

Gov Bacon is trying to erect a Denny's and more fats food outlets on the beach to block the surf. May as well super-size it.

Selfish self centered shore owners, should be sued for all the damage in their neighborhoods.......DUNES WORK....DUH.....SANDY PROVED IT....and the neighbors of the selfish ones should boycot and spit on thier property and make them feel unwelcome. Hopefully thier places got wiped out....

any homeowner than prevents dunes being built should be held liable for any flooding that may occur.

Kranzley, the owners probably own that section of beach where the dunes need to be built. They don't own the whole beach up to the water line.

If they don't want dunes then they get no aid. Do not restore the shore in front of their houses so they wash away even further into the bay.
