THINKING ABOUT parking your car in that bike lane? Don't do it. It'll cost you.
City Council approved the "Complete Streets" bill Thursday that makes a series of changes to the traffic code for bicyclists and motorists, stressing consideration for all who share the road.

As a avid cyclist, I agree abide by the law, or pay the fines!!! Dadair1- I agree, so does this mean that they will now hand out tickets to all of the jaywalkers in the city, who are also "running red lights" against the law? Only seems fair, right?
atibamanii - If a bicyclist stops, looks and runs a red light while clear, I have no problem with that, and suspect that most people don't. The problem is when a bicycle comes flying through a red light without looking or otherwise violates traffic laws and puts everybody in danger. jfar86
- I'm a cyclist too. I'm on the fence about stopping and going through lights. I've done it, depending on the intersection. I just think it leaves too much decision making up to the cyclist. The law's the law and for everyone's safety they should be followed. I am almost hit weekly (as a pedestrian) by someone blowing through a red light. That's infuriating.
PotteryPete - @atibamanii- great point. They should also ticket motorists who fail to signal and who nose dive into parking spots- the two greatest dangers for me. As well, the cars I ride next to who are "stopping" at the stop signs pass through the intersection faster than I do if I ignore the sign altogether on my bike.

Laws are only as good as they are enforced....Put teeth in it....Hammer the selfish, be it cylcists or motorists.... nuggett
How does that part work about not opening your door on the drivers side? How do you get out of your car? UncleJoe- Hopefully your car will not be parked where opening your door can kill a bicyclist. In MOST cases the opening of the door comes right after the car has pulled in front of a bicyclist in the bike only lane, and stopped with no warning forcing the bicyclist to either run into the back of the car, or quickly jump out into traffic to avoid hitting the back bumper. Once the bicyclist is in the traffic lane (assuming she didn't get squashed by a car), then the car door opens, again with no warning, knocking the person off her bike and into the street. Does your car only have one door?

The photo is a great advertisement for the city with all that graffiti and trash. Nice! eaglesfan19101
As an avid driver and cyclist in the city streets I applaud this bill. This stuff is common courtesy and common sense. Earl J
30 days in jail for skateboarding?? C'mon that's ridiculous. I hate skateboarders and wish they would go away but jail time??? No way. Save jail for the thugs. I knew David Oh would be a lousy council member. F. Harry Stowe- It is a little extreme. But I'm one of those people who is tired of the damage they do to properties my taxes pay to maintain.

How about bikes going the wrong way down a one way street or using the wrong bike lane that causes them to face on coming traffic? harbc
Great. Just post someone at 16th and Pine and 17th and Pine. You'll cover the city's deficit with all the light blowing, curb jumping bike riders. intelliwoman- Go travel and see the world, intelliwoman. Starting with North Philly. There's more to life than Rittenhouse. And get your husband off the couch and on to a bike. You'll soon find him beaming with stamina and then you won't be so sour and deluded.
