great story about jamie. i think he will continue to defy the law of averages this year with a respectable season. i dont understand why the phils wouldnt give him a chance as a long reliever this spring..

Jamie will have to be surgically removed from the mound! Best of luck to a man that brought winning and class, both on and off the field, to this city.

I have to echo the thoughts above- nice job and a great read. Loved watching Jamie pitch; truly fascinating watching hitters timing and batting approach unravel against him.

He's certainly an inspiration. But I don't think he could do long relief - I'm sure a 49 year-old needs to know well beforehand when he will be pitching, since he probably needs a 6 hour warmup.

    Great writing, thanks.

Jamie Moyer has had a great career and more importantly, done such wonderful charitable work off the field. What a better place the world would be with a few more Jamie Moyers. I only hope that 5 years after his baseball career is over there is a celebration of his success at Cooperstown, NY. When that time comes, I'd love it if he decided to go into the Hall as a Phillie but I think that would probably be asking too much.

Jamie Moyer is a terrific example of doing things the right way, understanding yourself and the game you play, and enjoying a true gift of being able to be a part of a game so loved by so many. Nothing would please me more than seeing him putting together two or three impossible (for anyone else) years and making it to the magical 300.

I guess when they remove him from the mound there, he will whine like a little school girl like he did here

Amaro is already trying to package a deal for him and has a 3 year $25 million contract waiting for him with a team option for $10 million. That's how RAJ rolls.

The great think about Moyer is how he has taken younger pitchers under his wing and his giving back to the community. Don't know where Bobphx got his "whining" story from, since the guy has always been a class act. I hope he can manage to get 10-20 more wins; it runs against today's preference of "flash" over "commitment," but it would nice to see him get into the HoF.

When all is going Jamie's way, he is the sweetest guy in the world. But the 2 times it didn't while he was here - he cried and griped like a baby. THAT says all I need to know about him. I am glad he is somewhere else.

The great thing about baseball is that there are so many ways to be good at it. A pitcher can do it with one unhittable breaking pitch, like Mariano Rivera, by changing speeds, like Moyer, or lots of other ways.

Jamie Moyer may be the first man to pitch in the majors after he begins collecting Social Security. I wonder...do the team doctors take Medicare? I'm rooting for him to pitch...forever.

There are many forms of greatness in sports and Moyer deserves to be recognized as a great one for the reasons Mr. Platt relates in such fine fashion. He definitely deserves to be in the Hall of Fame.

It would be great to see Jamie come back and get a victory to complete the comeback. Aside from that, every day he has left in the majors is a gift.

The Phils should try to get Moyer back as their pitching coach when he hangs it up around 55!

He's cheating more than time...he's cheating out a spot for a young AAA pitcher capable of half his ERA. He ought to hang it up and get into coaching. He's probably benefited most from MLB going to 300 teams in the past 2 decades.

A great story about Moyer, but are Griffey Jr., DiMaggio, and Gooden really the best choices for comparison? I realize they were all great players, but Griffey had a plethora of injuries, DiMaggio tore up his knee and was never the same and Doc Gooden had drug and injury problems throughout his career. Wouldn't a better example be players who didn't have to deal with career decimating injuries?

He's a HoF person.....hopefully, eventually the baseball HoF will see what a great pitcher he is and put him where he belongs.
As a lifelong Phillies fan, you will always be a Phillie to me. Thank you Jamie and may you win 20 this season.

Way to go Jamie! ...a true athlete and master student of the game. In 10 or 20 years from now, when you really do hang up the cleats, you will be the best pitching coach ever! Hopefully there will be players as passionate as you to coach.

    Sackbutt,

You comment is horse bleep. If the triple A pitchers are not good enough to beat him out, then they don't deserve his spot. If they can then they do deserve it. Let the competition results dictate, not the age. Beginning and end of story.

Thank god Bill Conlin didn't write this piece - it was clear, articulate and without superfluous excess - by the way where is Bill - seems kind of unfair an accused child molester can disappear like that - you think the paper would be a little more ethical and hold its employees accountable - not help them hide and sweep the event(s) under the rug. I miss all those references to Fregosi and the Krucker zzzzzzzzzzz. Hard to believe Harry - hard to believe.
