Style: The name is phonetic for "cooked" in Portuguese, but David Gilberg and Carla Gonçalves, the married team behind this BYOB, fill in the blanks with a culinary passion that elevates the rustic flavors of Portugal to rare sophistication. From homemade breads to the duck rice, soulful soups, and braised chicken gizzards (that you'll actually want to eat), each dish is a gem of refined authenticity. Add in warm service and a flickering candlelit romance, and Northern Liberties has a charming new winner.
Specialties: Caldo verde; chestnut-squash soup; queijo fresco; gizzards; shrimp turnovers; chopped vegetable salad; blood sausage; sardines; bacalhau; feijoada de marisco; baked duck rice; pork and clams; steak; stewed rabbit; chocolate salami, coconut tart.
Alcohol: BYOB. Bring a rustic red from Portugal (think: Douro) as well as a refreshing white vinho verde (Aveleda or Gazela are good value bottles). Spanish wines are an appropriate second choice.
Weekend noise: The room can hover in boisterous mid-80s decibels. (Ideal is 75 decibels or less.)
