I often find the beers on tap at the Iron Hill breweries to be, as at many brew-pub chains, predictable and safe. But Iron Hill has stepped up to another level of ambition with its new selection of special reserve beers. They come in 750 ml champagne bottles and are expensive (just under $20.) But Iron Hill's first-ever bottled beers are definitely worth a try.

But Iron Hill has stepped up to another level of ambition with its new selection of special reserve beers. They come in 750 ml champagne bottles and are expensive (just under $20.) But Iron Hill's first-ever bottled beers are definitely worth a try.

I was particularly impressed with the Tripel ($18.50), which seems to be a fine homage to Belgium's Westmalle in more than classic label alone - its creamy texture and a spicy fruit nose reminiscent of oranges stuck with clove. The Russian Imperial Stout ($19.50), meanwhile, is a powerhouse winter sipper that starts with the dark sweetness of cocoa and coffee, and brightens up for a citrusy hop finish.

The Tripel and Russian Imperial Stout are available at all Iron Hill locations, in West Chester, Media, North Wales, Phoenixville, Wilmington and Newark.
