Top food folks to gather this weekend

A busy weekend is coming up for the food-minded as the Philadelphia Food & Wine Festival takes over the Valley Forge Convention Center (1160 First Ave., King of Prussia) with hundreds of foods, wines, ales and liquors by restaurants and gourmet brands Friday, Oct. 21 through Sunday, Oct. 23.

The event will showcase an array of culinary talent including Food Network Iron Chef Jose Garces, Bravo Top Chef All Stars finalist Mike Isabella, and Ted Allen, host of the hit Food Network show Chopped.

Highlights:

  1. Culinary demonstrations from chefs such as David Boyle of Davio's Philadelphia hosted by guest emcee Chef Jennifer Mueller.

  2. Grand Market, a tasting frenzy with aisles of food and wine samples.

  3. New VIP Cocktail Party at the Bahama Breeze on Saturday, October 22 at 7 p.m.

  4. Special appearance by Alaskan crabber Russell Newberry of "Dangerous Deckhands"

  5. Taste of Italy Pavilion featuring a wide variety of fine wines to sample; a feast of cheeses, olives, oils, and breads direct from Italy; and Philadelphia area restaurants presenting their own signature Italian dishes.

  6. Wine seminars by wine expert Phillip Silverstone.

  7. Beer seminars by award winning author and host of Still Crazy after All These Beers, Gary Monterosso

Hours are 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. It's $30 in advance, $40 at the door; children ages 6 to 12 are $5.  Seminars, Chefs on Stage series and VIP Cocktail Party are additional. Tickets: www.gourmetshows.com/philly/.

Three Philly.com readers will compete in our Family Recipe Contest Wednesday, Oct. 19, at 6:30 p.m., at the Water Works restaurant, just off Kelly Drive. Joan M. Menige Mastroianni of St. Davids will prepare braciole with homemade marinara sauce; Ed Caruso of Ardmore will prepare the modestly named Caruso chicken; and David Herman of Elkins Park will prepare Greek shrimp. Winner gets four tickets to the festival and two tickets to an exclusive festival cocktail party to be held Saturday night at the Water Works.
