North Bowl plans a South Philly offshoot

Back in 2006, entrepreneur Oron Daskal opened North Bowl, a bowling alley/entertainment spot in a former auto mechanic's garage on Second Street in Northern Liberties.

For his second fun center, Daskal is headed to South Philly. He secured the former Thomas Colace produce warehouse at 19 E. Oregon Ave., basically across the I-95 underpass from Tony Luke's, and obtained zoning.

Now for the details: Daskal told me that the project, which should open by December, would be more of a sports bar. (The Passyunk Post, the blog run by Daily News assistant city editor Albert Stumm, dubbed it "South Bowl" when reporting the deal first. Daskal said that no name has been selected and that he wasn't sure if he would brand the two centers together.)

The project, on two levels as is North Bowl, will have arcade/video games and pool tables (as North Bowl has) as well as outdoor batting cages and HD video golf consoles, he said.

The South Philly project will be larger: 25,000 square feet versus 17,000 at North Bowl, and 26 lanes versus 17 at North Bowl. He said the food should be different - he's toying with the idea of a wood-fired oven.

Meanwhile there is an empty bowling alley/bar at Rhawn and the Boulevard. Go figure.

What is it that killed neighborhood bowling alleys and all the leagues? There are lots of guesses; any experts want to say why? It's great fun & all ages can take part. Even couch potatoes can get a little exercise this way.

Hey Ralph1 the northeast is a dying part of the city. Nobody wants to invest there. To many long time residents complaining about diversity issues and not doing anything about it.

The Northeast is dying because it is the only part of the city which is not connected by good mass transit. The obstruction by Northeast residents of the building of the Broad Street extension up Roosevelt Blvd. because it would bring in "the wrong element" was the death of that area. Every other area of the city has access to transportation that can get them downtown in minutes. From the Northeast, it takes over an hour, unless you are one of the few living near either the Trenton line or Fox Chase line. The rest of the Northeast might as well be in Central Jersey.

So what do you suggest Kerz......a cross burning or something? Get over it, the entire country is diverse. I'm white but I have to say caucasians are going out of style.

Caucasians aren't going out of style. People of all races who refuse to get along with others are going out of style. You don't have to burn a cross. Try saying hello to a new neighbor instead of making negative or ignorant comments. Promote the diversity and family friendly area the NE could be and places like North Bowl would come to the NE.

How come every article written sand commented on Philly.com turns into some nasty race war? We are getting a new place to employ people. We are getting a place where people can have fun. We are getting a place where you can hold family gatherings, reunions, birthday celebrations. Be glad for people like Oron Daskal who still sees Philly as place you make FUN things happen.Load up the car or get on public transportation and join in!

Will he be charging the same unannounced 10% tax on all sales that Northbowl does?

The Northeast is dying because it's largely a monolithic spread of identical 1,000-square-foot airlights. Despite being middle and working class all these years it looks purpose-built as a ghetto.

The problem with the Northeast is it's heyday was when city planners made really bad decisions that favored netherworlds like the Northeast. Now, people are getting wiser and don't want to live in hellholes like that.

-Ralph Blvd Lanes was on a land slide for a while. Then came a couple shootings and it was time to shut it down. The area has to be able to support the idea and with Thunderbird lanes 5 mins away on Homle Ave. I doubt someone reopens at Rhawn and Blvd.

Studies have shown that by 2050 the Caucasian race will be in the minority in the US. I'm glad I won't live to see it.
