New Montco winery wins state title

The 2008 Meritage from Fort Washington's Karamoor Estate was awarded a Double Gold, the overall top prize, at the 17th annual Farm Show Wine Competition at the Pennsylvania Farm Show in Harrisburg.

In addition to the Governors Cup for Best of Show, the 2008 Meritage also won Best Vinifera and Dry Grape. This year's show reviewed 36 Pennsylvania wineries, of which 265 varieties were judged.

Karamoor Estate's vineyard has been in production only since 2007; 2012 was the first year of on-site winery production.

In The Inquirer's holiday-gift guide, critic Craig LaBan wrote: "A few of [Karamoor's] Bordeaux-style blends are still too big and young." But he praised its 2008 cabernet franc, with notes of raspberry, bell pepper, milk chocolate, and anise.

Karamoor's wines are available at some State Stores and at restaurants mostly in the Bucks-Montgomery area. Karamoor sells cask wines to Earth Bread + Brewery and Alla Spina.

Other winners announced Saturday:

Greendance Winery of Mount Pleasant, Westmoreland County, received Best of Show Sweet/Dessert Grape with its Diamond. The 2011 vintage also received Best American and Double Gold honors.

Crossing Vineyards and Winery of Washington Crossing, Bucks County, received Best of Show Fruit and a Gold award with its Wild Berry. Pickering Winery of Wysox, Bradford County, received Best Hybrid and a Gold Award for its 2011 Vignoles, and Wilcox Winery of Wilcox, McKean County, won Best Sparkling and a Gold Award for its 2011 Celebration.
