The town's cupcake competition is heating up.

The other day saw the debut of Crumbs Bake Shop - a publicly traded cupcakery native to New York with outposts in Beverly Hills - in a corner store at 133 S. 18th St., near Rittenhouse Square.

Next week - construction gods willing - will see the opening of Philly Cupcake's second location, on the corner of 20th and South Streets. Johnny Columbo and Michael Lewis' flagship location opened three years ago at 11th and Chestnut Streets.

Also on the docket is a store at 13th and Panama Streets for Sweet Box Cupcakes, as Gretchen Fantini has been talking about a bricks-and-mortar showcase for her baking. For now, she's doing the truck route.

And Buttercream - also a truck - is making noise about a shop at 2015 Moyamensing Ave. in South Philadelphia.
