Horse meat on the menu

POSTED: Thursday, February 21, 2013, 10:04 AM

Would you eat horse meat on a restaurant menu?
Yes, I'll give it a go
No, I've seen National Velvet more than once

Ever searching for new experiences for their patrons, chefs Marc Vetri and Peter McAndrews are considering adding horse meat to their menus.

McAndrews, who serves a mock horse meat dish at his BYOB Monsu, told FooBooz that he wants to go all-in this spring - never mind any criticism. A chef in New York put it on the menu last year and then quickly pulled it after protests.

Vetri says he enjoyed a horse filet mignon in Montreal and said he would love to serve it. He doesn't see the distinction between animals we eat or don't eat.

Thumper, yea. Trigger, neigh?

By the way, you can slaughter a horse for human consumption in the USA since a ban was lifted in 2011.

The post is here.

I guess I don't get why people willingly eat cow, pig, chicken, etc but they feel compelled to protest the consumption of horse meat.

Because horses in the United States are given meds and vaccines that stay a lifetime in the meat. This makes the meat toxic. They are pets and not raised for food so these toxins are not traced or regulated. It causes ethal idiosyncratic adverse effects in humans, Blood Cancer and the latest study ED.

It's a slippery slope. Next they will be serving human meat.

Why is it a slippery slope? McAndrews is the best chef in the city. If he made it, I'd eat it.

Not for me. Had it in France and did not like it. Since I am a horse owner I do not consider horses a food animal.

Wildman Bill, if you had a cow or pig would you not consider that a food animal? Proud member of P.E.T.A. right here: People Eating Tasty Animals. I always thought it was funny when the rumor came around that (name your place) served horse meat. The obvious answer is always the same, "well I guess I like horse meat."

I guess that this debate finally answers that question posed to horse's through the centuries. "Why the long face?" LOL

What about the cats, dogs and vermin served up in Chinatown? If you put enough sauce on anything, someone will eat it and smack their lips.

I don't think there is anything intrinsically wrong in eating horse meat...or dog meat or cat meat for that matter. I understand that in this country we aren't too keen on it, but if an animal is slaughtered humanely, what is the difference?

I hunted much of my live. I've eaten everything from squirrel to racoon. I would not try to stop someone from eating horse but I would not. Yes it is partially an emotional argument. I would not eat dogs or cats either. The other concern for me is that horses are not the type of domesticated animal bred for food, like cattle or hogs. Horses are very tempermental, very jumpy, they do not travel well especially in groups forced into trucks, their legs do not hold their weight well which makes processing difficult. To each his won but not for me

venison, beef, bison, ostrich, pork, elk, lamb, turkey, chicken, duck, goose, quail, squab, horse and other meats I can't recall besides a variety of sea foods. Everybody thinks of these as "foods", even the pet lamb or pig or goose put on display at farm shows end up on the table sometime. For heaven sakes even the oxen used as farm animals will end up in the stew.

Somehow horse is not supposed to be consumed? Don't get it. Horse is not the smartest amongst this group. That belongs to the pig. Pet lambs are cuter though dumber. Pet goose? Feed? As good as any animal gets. Good horse feed and pasture is better than anything a cow gets in the stockyards

    As @robtpenn says, strictly emotional

Eventually there will be no animals left at all because humans will eat them all. And when there are no animal, the cannibals will come after us. Humans were the worse creation god ever created. He should of did his homework a little more.

Yet the same people who champion McAndrews and Vetri, are appalled when dog and cat is served in SE Asia...really, what's the difference? I have dogs and love them, but where does it stop? When do we start carving up humans for consumption to become "cutting edge"? It's a f*ng horse...we abuse them enough as race instruments, do we really have to eat them?

Considering the equestrian history in the area...I think it would be a mistake for them to serve horse meat. The protests would be the same or worse here in the Philly area. I personally would not set foot in their restaurants again.

USAF retired, born raised Philly, Naval Yard 1960. Been to France were horse meat is readily for human consumption. Tried it in 1998, still eat as of this day. On thing I found out when I left Philly in 78. If you never had experienced, how can you criticize? If you form an opinion from other's, how can you draw a true conclusion? Needless to say, when I visit family, it's a 72hr period. Life in San Antonio, USAF City, is good. LOL USAF 79 - 00. GO SPURS GO!!!

First and foremost horses in this country are not raised as food animals. Many of the veterinary drugs given either occasionally, quarterly or annually are toxic to humans. Possibly the most lethal is known as Bute which is a common pain killer administered to domestic horses. It remains in the muscle mass which if eaten can cause cancer. This is why it is not used on food animals i.e. cow, pig, chicken or sheep.

Do people have to become gravely ill for us to stop this?

Secondly there is no humane way to slaughter a horse. Check out Youtube and see for yourself.

Thirdly this is another attempt at gaining publicity by the chef and restaurant. It's happened before in NY. Folks it's illegal to sell horse meat for human consumption in this country due to the toxins so why would a so called 'rising star' put his reputation and business on the line? Notoriety...the free kind!

This is not an argument for or against eating cow or pig or chicken. Horses are companion animals, they are pets. We don't eat our dogs and cats in the US, horses are the same. In addition, horses sent to slaughter are usually filled with drugs from their careers in racing or show. We have to draw a unified line somewhere. We don't eat our pets, period.

I take exception to the wording in your poll.....what has National Velvet got to do with anything? This issue is NOT a joke. Or are you not aware of the drug-infested horse meat scandal in Europe (drug-infested US horses)

Some 80% of Americans oppose horse slaughter for human consumption. They view horses on par with dogs. Horses are companions, not food animals. Eating horse meat is not our culture here. Further, horses are given numerous drugs and topical products that are not tested safe for food animals. The US government is aware of this. Do we trust them to see that this unsafe product is not provided to Americans? Don't think so, as over 100K US horses ship to slaughter in Mexico and Canada annually. It is misrepresented as 'clean, grass-fed' meat. What a terrible lie. Where is our news media on this concern?

Horse meat is not safe to eat! Horses are raised as pets and sporting animals. As such they receive medications and supplements that are not safe for human consumption. Some of these medications have no withdrawal period, meaning it never fully leaves the horse's system. These medications can cause all number of problems if eaten long term, consumed by children, or consumed by pregnant women. I have quit eating any ground beef, fast food meat, or any prepared meat products. The beef I buy must say "Product of the USA." I will NOT buy beef that is labeled "Product of USA, Canada, or Mexico," as much of what is sold in our grocery stores is. http://stophorseslaughter.com/blog/?p=154
