'Food Network' star plans Camden restaurant

Gallery: 'Food Network' star plans Camden restaurant

CAMDEN — Former Food Network host Aaron McCargo is trying to open a new bistro in his hometown and one of the nation’s most impoverished cities.

The Courier-Post of Cherry Hill (http://on.cpsj.com/12kSPm1 ) reports McCargo is applying for a $100,000 Urban Enterprise Zone grant to turn a vacant downtown building in Camden into McCargo’s Bistro.

McCargo had a restaurant in Camden a decade ago, but it lasted only two years. That was before his 2008 victory on “The Next Food Network Star” and his three-year run hosting “Big Daddy’s House.”

His publicist says the bistro would feature “funked-out bold flavored food.”

McCargo now lives in suburban Gloucester County.

You are intentionally or not, misunderstanding.

I take the same precautions in any urban area, I always did: Philly, Boston, Houston, London, Istanbul, Athens, Rome, etc....

It's not his money so once the $100K is gone so is the restaurant.

Does this guy have a sudden burning desire to run himself into bankruptcy?? That's the only reason I can think of as to why anyone in their right mind would want to try to start a business in Camden!

Why does anybody have a problem with this man trying to make an effort to set up a legitimate business?

Elk...while we applaud your civic pride we re no blind or stupid. Camden should be bulldozed and sown with salt.

I have met a lot of people, many kids while volunteering or simply walking down a street.

Majority of the people are not criminals, they are not guilty of anything, they are just people trying to survive in difficult conditions!

I believe in respecting people and giving them the benefit of doubt without making assumptions! Most people do not disappoint!

He's from Camden so I'm sure that has something to do with it also. I wish him luck.

Sure, he's got a TV show and some dough. Pretty typical.

Don't listen to 835union. You're a smart girl. Go visit him at the restaurant and put it on thick. Think of your future. Pretend to love him.

Good for him! How else do you think cities like Camden get out of the gutter (see Harlem)? Certainly not from governement subsidies (there's no money in it for them so why would they help?). How about you guys grow a pair and try something new and "dangerous" instead of the closest Fogo de Chao or Cheesecake Factory? And help a struggling community? And maybe realize that Camden isn't THAT bad?

If your neighborhood was going down the drain, you would either a) move, because you're selfish and a coward or b) support your local community. Assuming you aren't selfish, the only difference between your local community and Camden is distance, and the level to which your community has plunged. If you have the money, do what you would do for your neighbor and eat at his restraunt to support him.

I understand that the dude building this restaurant has money, so he doesn't necessarily need it, however, raising the standard encourages others to come to the area. This creates jobs. Jobs create revenue. Revenue creates opporunity. Opportunity creates more business. Businesses create jobs. All of this creates a good environment for what really matters, and that is a safe environment for the next generation to continue the cycle. This ultimately creates a more brotherly culture which, ironically, Philadelphia and the surrounding areas have no current understanding of. I know it's just trying out a new restaurant, but you have to create the momentum somehow.

I'd patronized his establishment. I liked his show. He really knows how to cook the stuff I like to eat.
