'Food Network' star plans Camden restaurant

Gallery: 'Food Network' star plans Camden restaurant

CAMDEN — Former Food Network host Aaron McCargo is trying to open a new bistro in his hometown and one of the nation’s most impoverished cities.

The Courier-Post of Cherry Hill (http://on.cpsj.com/12kSPm1 ) reports McCargo is applying for a $100,000 Urban Enterprise Zone grant to turn a vacant downtown building in Camden into McCargo’s Bistro.

McCargo had a restaurant in Camden a decade ago, but it lasted only two years. That was before his 2008 victory on “The Next Food Network Star” and his three-year run hosting “Big Daddy’s House.”

His publicist says the bistro would feature “funked-out bold flavored food.”

McCargo now lives in suburban Gloucester County.

Big Daddy’s House is a good show and Aaron seems like a really nice guy but I have to question his location choice. I can't see anyone really wanting to risk venturing into Camden to try his food. Its much safer to use one of his recipes in your own home.

The only problem I see is, how will you pass my plate through the bullet proof glass?

I applaud him for doing this; as risky as it is. Someone has to be brave and do things like this if Camden is ever going to change. Also, we don't know the exact location. Maybe it is on the waterfront near the stadium.

Those of you with your nasty comments about Camden: Have you every step foot in the city?

I have been coming here for more than 20 years, I heard a gunshot once! I live in one of the safest part of Philly and I heard gunshots 2-3 times!

Depending where in the city, a bistro can survive!

That was in 1991, I remember watching it from across the river in Philly, there were 134-136 fires set that night.

There has not been a repeat of that event!

I live in Philly. However, nobody was killed (luckily) since they were burning the vacant buildings!

I will pass on crossing the bridge to Camden anytime soon.

He is opening it in Camden because of the $100K GRANT...which he wouldn't have to pay back if it fails; it's a no-lose proposition for McCargo.

The better question is, "Why is the city of Camden spending $100K on grants when the money is surely needed just about everywhere else?" It's akin to investing in swampland.

Eik, I grew up in Cramer Hill. Camden was and is a dump.

    Where do you live/work now?

I believe that Camden has gotten better in the last twenty years and I have no problems as long as I take all the precautions that I do in every urban area!
