At chili cook-off, even your bowl is handmade

The fourth annual University City Arts League Chili Bowl is set for Sunday, April 7 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Arts League, 4226 Spruce St.

A $20 entry fee will not only get you a hand-made ceramic bowl created by Arts League potters, but all the chili you care to dish into the bowl, as well.

Eight local restaurants will be serving up their versions of chili: Atiya Ola, Distrito, Gold Standard Café, Green Line Café, Guacamole, Harvest, Milk and Honey and Powelton Pizza.

Greg Salisbury, head of SOOP catering, will once again be creating meat and vegan chili. Yards Brewing will supply beverages.

You can also vote for the chili champion of the neighborhood in a spirited tasting competition. Pottery is the most popular of all courses at the Arts League and is available for children, ages 5 to 12 after school Monday to Friday, and for adults on the weekends and on several weeknights. Family pottery classes are offered on Saturday afternoons.

The University City Arts League is a community arts and education center that has been operating in the community since 1967. It operates nearly 70 arts classes for children and adults. Classes include painting and drawing, printmaking, pottery, creative writing, dance, capoeira, flamenco, tango, zumba, hula hooping and much more. About 225 children attend weekly arts classes there, including pottery, which is offered every day of the week.
